One of the first big celebrations this month is Raksha Bandhan on August 9. It is a special day when sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers’ wrists and wish for their safety. The brothers also make a promise to take care of their sisters. This day is celebrated in many states and is a public holiday in most of them, so schools, colleges, and even government offices stay closed.

Jhulan Purnima on 13–17

From August 13 to 17, some parts of India also celebrate Jhulan Purnima, which is related to Lord Krishna and Radha. It is not a national-level holiday but may be observed in local regions.

Independence Day on August 15

Independence Day is the next major event. On August 15, the whole country remembers the day India became free from British rule in 1947. It’s a national holiday, and schools usually host flag-hoisting events, cultural programs, and patriotic songs. Students take part in speeches and marches, showing pride in their country.

Janmashtami on August 16

Then comes Janmashtami on August 16. This festival marks the birthday of Lord Krishna. People celebrate by singing devotional songs, performing plays based on Krishna’s life, and praying at midnight. In states where Janmashtami is a major celebration, schools declare a day off.

Onam is another big festival celebrated from August 26 to 28. This one is most important in Kerala and is known  Kerala and is known as the harvest festival. It remembers King Mahabali’s return to visit his people. During Onam, people make beautiful flower decorations, eat big traditional meals, take part in games, and enjoy boat races.

It is a public holiday in Kerala, and while schools in other parts of India don’t close, many organize special programs and performances to let students learn more about the culture.

Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27

Another festival towards the end of the month is Ganesh Chaturthi, which falls on August 27. This day celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. People install Ganesha idols at home or in public places, offer prayers, and do big processions. It is especially grand in Maharashtra and southern states, and most schools give a holiday on this day so students can join the celebrations with their families.
