Payal Rohatgi was arrested from her Ahmedabad residence by Rajasthan Police on Sunday for allegedly making an objectionable video on former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
As per a national agency, Payal Rohatgi was allegedly detained for her comments on former Prime Minister Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru.
SP Mamta Gupta was quoted as saying, “Payal Rohatgi has been detained. Case registered.” Soon after, something similar was claimed by the actress through a tweet, wherein she mentioned being arrested for making a video on Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru. “I am arrested by #RajasthanPolice for making a video on #MotilalNehru which I made from taking information from #google. Freedom of Speech is a joke,” wrote Payal.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has come forward and appealed for Payal Rohatgi’s release on the grounds of ‘freedom of expression,’ however, the politician also made it a point to slam the actress by calling her alleged remarks as something ‘tasteless & false’. He wrote, “There’s little doubt that the comments of @Payal_Rohatgi were tasteless &false, typical Sanghi drivel circulated on @whatsapp. But to arrest her is unwise: upholding freedom of expression means allowing her to say stupid things about police getting involved. She shd be released.”
