A gunmen opened fire at a mosque in Quebec City during an evening prayer that killed at least six people, said the mosque’s president. Two arrests had been made concerning the shooting, a police spokesman said. The number of injured victims is yet to be known.

As per a report in Le Soleil newspaper, one of the detained accused was 27 years old and had a “Quebecois name.” Another suspects possessed an AK-47, said reports.

The incident took place at the Islamic Cultural Center of Quebec at around 8PM when nearly 40 people were attending the service.

The two alleged gunmen were masked said an unidentified man to Radio Canada. “It seemed to me that they had a Quebecois accent. They started to fire, and as they shot they yelled, ‘Allahu akbar!’ The bullets hit people that were praying. People who were praying lost their lives. A bullet passed right over my head,” the person said.

Another unidentified man who was looking for his friends told the paper “I’ve tried to reach them, but I cannot. It’s terrible.”

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard called the act “barbaric violence” and conveyed solidarity with victims’ families.

“Deeply saddened” by the loss of life, said Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale on Twitter. His office said no cause has been confirmed yet.
