IPL 2022: No excuse, says KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer after 5th consecutive defeat

With less than two weeks until the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are concerned about the availability of their captain, Shreyas Iyer.

The middle-order batter endured a recurrence of a back injury during the most recent Test between Australia and India in Ahmedabad. He has been advised to recover for ten days, with a decision on his IPL 2023 availability pending.

After seeing spine specialist Dr. Abhay Nene, Shreyas will have to wait 10 days to learn his exact condition, according to Cricbuzz. Although the results of his tests were not encouraging, the KKR captain has not yet been officially declared out of the IPL.

Shreyas Iyer doubtful for ODIs against Australia due to recurring back injury

“The initial scans revealed negative results, and he was immediately removed from further participation in the Ahmedabad Test. After returning to his birthplace of Mumbai, Iyer consulted Abhay Nene, a specialist at Bombay and Lilavati hospitals who treats spine complications, according to the report.

“Nene is believed to have advised Iyer to rest and undertake rehabilitation, as is customary in such situations. He was instructed to return in ten days, and Iyer may learn his immediate and long-term future in the coming days, according to the report.

Before the commencement of the fifth day of the Ahmedabad Test, the BCCI issued the following statement: “Shreyas Iyer will no longer participate in this match. The opinion of an expert will be obtained.”

On the eve of the first one-day international against Australia in Mumbai, India’s fielding instructor T Dilip confirmed that Shreyas Iyer will not participate in the three-match series.

According to the report, the Knight Riders are preparing for any scenario in the event that Iyer does not recover in time for the lucrative tournament.

“The squad is expected to assemble in Kolkata within the next couple of days, and a decision on the new captain, if necessary, will be made after Iyer’s situation has been clarified,” the statement continued.

While the IPL 2023 is scheduled to begin on March 31, Kolkata Knight Riders will begin their season on April 1 against Punjab Kings.
