SNAP Student Eligibility: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, helps many low-income people and families get food in the United States. But if you are a student, the rules to get SNAP benefits are a bit different. To qualify, you need to know who counts as a student under SNAP rules and what you must do to get help in 2025.
SNAP Student Eligibility: Who Qualifies?
You are seen as a student by SNAP if you go to school at least half-time. This means you must be enrolled in a college, university, community college, or a technical or vocational school that asks for a high school diploma or something similar to join. How many hours you study for half-time depends on your school, not SNAP.

However, some classes don’t make you a student for SNAP. For example, if you take job training, English classes, professional courses, or community education that are not part of your main school program, SNAP might not call you a student. If you’re not sure about your classes, it’s good to ask your local SNAP office for help.
Most college students attending more than half-time are not eligible for SNAP benefits, unless they meet one of the following exemptions:
- Be under 18 years of age or 50 years of age or older.
- Being physically or mentally unable to work.
- Work at least 20 hours a week in paid employment.
- Participate in a federal or state work-study program.
- Participate in an on-the-job training program.
- Being a single parent caring for a child under 12 while studying full-time.
- Caring for a child under the age of 6, or one between the ages of 6 and 11 if you do not have childcare services that allow you to work or study.
- Receive assistance from TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families).
- Be enrolled in college through an authorized program such as SNAP E&T, WIOA or Trade Adjustment Assistance.
If your school provides a meal plan that covers most of your meals, SNAP might say you are not eligible, even if you fit other rules. The state looks at each meal plan carefully to decide this.
SNAP Income Limits 2025: Maximum income limit for a household of 7 people?
During the COVID-19 health emergency, some special rules made it easier for students to get SNAP. But those rules ended on July 1, 2023. Now, students applying or renewing SNAP after that date must follow the normal rules again.
Being a student does not mean you cannot get SNAP. You just need to meet certain requirements and exemptions. If you qualify for one of these and also fit the income and resource limits, you might get food benefits that help you eat better and stay healthy.
