The Election Commission on Monday granted the ‘cycle’ symbol to Samajwadi Party leader and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
Earlier, both factions in the Samajwadi Party, one led by Mulayam Singh and the other by son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, have staked their claim over the party symbol in front of the Election Commission.
UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had declared himself the SP’s national president on January 1, and assigned margdarshak’s role to his father Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The Akhilesh-led faction had submitted afftdavits, signed by party legislators, to the EC claiming ownership to the party symbol as he enjoyed the support of the majority of the party’s members of Parliament and legislatures.
On Saturday, The EC had heard the two loudmouthed factions. Throughout the six-hour long hearing, both the factions staked their claim to the symbol. While Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal represented Akhilesh’s side, former Solicitor-General of India Mohan Parasaran headed the squad signifying Mulayam Singh Yadav’s side.
