SSDI Payment September 23: Another Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payment was scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, 2026. But this payment date didn’t apply to every SSDI recipient.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a payment system that spreads benefits across different Wednesdays. For people who got Social Security benefits under the regular schedule after April 30, 1997, the payment day depends on the birthday of the worker whose record the benefits are based on.
That means the September 23 payment was mainly for people whose relevant birthday falls from the 21st through the 31st of the month.

Who Got The SSDI Payment On September 23?
September’s Wednesday payment dates were divided into three groups. Those with birthdays from the 1st to the 10th were scheduled to get their money on September 9. The 11th to 20th group was scheduled for September 16. The final group, covering birthdays from the 21st to the 31st, had September 23 as its payment day.
For people getting benefits through another person’s Social Security record, such as certain family members, the birthday used for the payment schedule can be the worker’s birthday rather than their own.
So, simply having SSDI doesn’t automatically mean September 23 was your payment date.
Some SSDI Recipients Have A Different Payment Date
There are some important exceptions to the Wednesday system. People who were entitled to Social Security before May 1, 1997, generally continue to receive their payments on the 3rd of the month. SSA also says people who receive both Social Security and SSI generally get Social Security on the 3rd and SSI on the 1st.
This older payment system is still used for some beneficiaries even though the Wednesday schedule now covers many people.
SSI and SSDI are also different programmes. SSDI is based on a person’s work record and disability status, while SSI is a separate needs-based benefit. The payment schedule can therefore be different for someone receiving both.

What To Do if Your Payment is Missing
Most Social Security benefits are sent electronically. This can include direct deposit or a Direct Express debit card. If the payment doesn’t appear on the expected date, SSA’s payment schedule advises beneficiaries to allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.
