Her father, Bajirao Patil, had an active role in politics while her elder brother Padamsinh Bajirao Patil worked as a state minister and Lok Sabha MP which allowed her to observe their public duties and governance activities.
She married Ajit Pawar in 1985 who became a leading figure of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and one of Maharashtra’s most powerful political leaders until his death in January 2026. Sunetra maintained a quiet life for many years even after marrying into one of the state’s most influential political families because she preferred to devote herself to community work instead of pursuing political office.

Sunetra completed her Bachelor of Commerce degree from SB Arts and Commerce College in Aurangabad (now Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) in the early 1980s. Her first campaign in Katewadi which she started from her ancestral village near Baramati became her most important and successful campaign. Sunetra established cleanliness drives after she recognized that the village faced challenges from poor sanitation and open defecation problems.
This initiative enabled the village to reach “open-defecation free” status which subsequently led to the village receiving recognition as a model eco-village. The village features solar street lighting and biogas plants and waste management systems and organic farming initiatives.
Women’s Empowerment and Job Creation
Sunetra also played a pivotal role as chairperson of the Baramati Hi-Tech Textile Park which established a 65-acre facility to generate over 15000 employment positions for workers who mainly consisted of rural women performing weaving and printing tasks.

She established the Environmental Forum of India EFOI in 2010 to advance environmentally sustainable village development through its eco-friendly village models and sustainable development methods.
