The Gauhati High Court (HC) has directed founder of the popular Super 30 education programme Anand Kumar to pay compensation of Rs 10,000 each to five students or their guardians who claimed before the court that they were cheated in the name of admission to ‘Super 30’, the education programme founded by Kumar.

The division bench of Gauhati HC, comprising Chief Justice Ajai Lamba and Justice AM Bujarbaruah, directed Anand Kumar to appear before the court on November 28.

Four students of IIT-Guwahati — Avinash Baro, Bikash Das, Monjit Doley and Dhaniram Taw — had filed a PIL at the Gauhati High Court in September, 2018, and they alleged that Anand Kumar is a fraud.

The students also alleged that in 2018 during IIT entrance examination Anand Kumar claimed that 26 out of 30 students from his Super 30 had qualified the examination but till now he has not disclosed the names of 26 students who qualified the IIT entrance examination.

Super 30 is a Patna-based institute which prepares students from poor economic backgrounds for entrance test to the premier IITs.

Based on the petition, the court had issued notices in September last year to Kumar and senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Abhayanand, who started Super 30 along with Kumar in 2002. The two parted ways in 2008.

While Kumar has not appeared in the court or replied to the notice, Abhayanand filed an affidavit in January this year, saying that he had no knowledge of how Super 30 has been functioning after 2008.
