Instead of increasing the revenue, surge pricing in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trin had done an opposite job. The revenue of Indian Railway had declined by Rs232 crore as compared to the previous year.

Railway data reveals that a large number of seats in trains like Mumbai Rajdhani, August Kranti Rajdhani, Sealdah Rajdhani and Trivandrum Rajdhani are vacant for the month of December and January.

A senior official at the Railway ministry said the occupancy in trains has been hit by 15 to 20 percent after the flexi fare scheme was introduced. While speaking to media, he said  “The flexi fare scheme has backfired. Occupancy in trains has gone down substantially as passengers are getting flight tickets at cheaper rates. The railway ministry will review the scheme only after three months”

Air line services are offering tickets to popular destinations like Goa,Bangalore and Mumbai at prices around Rs 3000.Because of the higher train ticket rate, passengers are opting flights in the festive season.

From October 1 to 10, Railway collected Rs 4,072 crore which declined by Rs 232 crore this year. Through flexi fare scheme railway was expected to generate Rs 1,000 crore this year.

Under the surge pricing scheme, first 10 percent of the seats will be sold in the normal fare. Afterwards, there will be an increase by 10 percent with every 10 percent of berthssold with a ceiling of 50 percent. The scheme is applicable for AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier and AC Chair car.
