Russian airstrikes accidentally killed three Turkish soldiers and wounded 11 others during an operation against Islamic State in northern Syria on Thursday morning, Turkey’s military said in a statement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and expressed sorrow and condolences for the accidental killing, the military added.

Turkish soldiers were supporting the Syrian rebels to recapture the city of al-Bab from the Islamic State.

Russia and Turkey have been jointly targeting ISIS in airstrikes after the Astana peace talks.

The Free Syrian Army, backed by Turkish military, have regained control of the two key villages of Qabasin and Bazza in the Northeast of al-Bab.

The Turkish military said on Thursday they had killed 44 militants in aerial and artillery strikes and clashes in northern Syria.
