The VIPs at an average get three cops to safeguard them from any threat while there is only one cop for every 663 commoners. This clearly shows that the VIP culture is still prevalent regardless of promises from politicians that they were against such special treatment.

Data gathered by the Bureau of Police Research and Development and accessed by TOI reveals that 56,944 cops safeguard 20,000 VIPs across the nation. Thus, average 2.73 cops protect every VIP while average comes miserably low for citizens who pay the taxes.

As per the data, the tendency of keeping security is more widespread in north and east India. While 3,200 VIPs are being protected by 6,248 cops in Bihar, 2,207 VIPs are protected by 4,233 cops in West Bengal. But then, only 501 are formally sanctioned for this purpose, reported TOI.

On the states like Punjab, there are 5,315 cops protecting 1,852 VIPs; Jammu and Kashmir have 2,075 VIPs safeguarded by 4,499 cops. A whopping 7,420 policemen are deployed to shield 489 VIPs in Delhi.

However, southern states are as a relatively low number of cops deployed for VIP protection. Maharashtra has only 74 protected persons secured by 961 cops. Besides, Kerala has 57 VIPs shielded by 214 cops.
