Tihar Jail prisoners, authorities donate salary to help widow of fellow inmate

Several Tihar jail prisoners and even jai authorities raised funds and even donated their monthly salary in to help the family of a fellow inmate who died of a heart attack after serving over 13 years inside jail number four of the correction facility. The inmates handed over a cheque of ₹3.39 lakh to their deceased friend’s widow on Thursday.

Bhaskar Malik (40), facing murders charges, was lodged in the jail for the last 13 years. He was granted parole in June to visit his family in a village in Odisha. While returning back to jail, he had a heart attack in the train. Bhaskar Malik left behind a 12-year-old child, a wife, 75-year-old father.

As quoted in the reports, Rajesh Chauhan, superintendent of jail four, said this was the first time prisoners had taken such an initiative in Tihar.

“Bhaskar out on parole after serving 13 years in jail. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. He had a heart attack on the train while returning to prison. He died at a young age and left behind a 12-year-old child, a wife, and his 75-year-old father. The prisoners learned about his family’s status and offered to contribute money,” Chauhan said.

His family has four goats as pets which was definitely not enough for their survival. Bhaskar used to send his family the earnings.
