BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa said that the party will hold a major protest in the state on Friday (November 9) against JDS-Congress coalition government’s plan to celebrate the birth anniversary of 19th-century warrior King Tipu Sultan, because it is against people’s sentiments.

”We are opposing Tipu Jayanti celebration. Nobody will appreciate this celebration. In the interest of the people, the state government must stop it. Government’s intention behind Tipu Jayanti celebration is just to satisfy Muslim community,” said BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa.

People in Mysuru believe that the Tipu Jayanti is simply being politicized by the political parties in the state, but they are completely clueless the hidden agenda or political moves of the politicians behind both the promotion and the opposition of the celebration.

Celebrations are to be held under the cover of Prohibitory Orders at Srirangapatna, the capital Mysuru, from where Tipu Sultan once ruled. The Mandya district administration has clamped Prohibitory Orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code from 6 pm on November 9 to 6 am on November 11 in Srirangapatna, for holding the celebration of Tipu Jayanti.

“It is strange that Tipu Sultan does not have complete acceptance in his own capital. It is unfortunate that the Mandya district administration is forced to celebrate the Jayanti under a strict vigil in the town, which is largely associated with Tipu Sultan,” MS Mahesh Raje Urs, a director of Arasu Mandali Sangha told Deccan Herald.

Superintendent of Police Shivaprakash Devaraj informed the daily that processions, display of flags, raising of slogans, etc have been banned, since a large number of people are expected to arrive at the venue. The SP said that although prayers can be offered near Tipu’s tomb at Gumbaz in Ganjam public speech is banned.

Since 2015, celebrations were held at Gumbaz, but members of the Muslim community have urged the officials to change the venue to Mini Vidhana Soudha this year.
