Twitterati mocks Shilpa Shetty over ‘Animal Farm’ faux pas

Hailing the initiative of Council of School Certificate Examination (CISCE) to include Harry Potter series in the English Literature syllabus for junior and middle school students, Bollywood actress said Shilpa Shetty said George Orwell’s Animal Farm, should be included in school syllabus as it will “teach the little ones to love and care for animals”.

The book, based on a dystopian society and the Russian Revolution of 1917, is a social commentary on the Stalinist era in Soviet Union.

“I think having books like ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Harry Potter’ as part of the syllabus is a great move because it cultivates imagination and creativity at a young age. I think books like Little Women would also encourage respect towards women at a young age. Even Animal Farm should be included as it will teach the little ones to love and care for animals,” the daily quoted Shilpa as saying.

Her apparent suggestion that Animal Farm, Orwell’s celebrated analogy of the Russian revolution, was chiefly concerned with animal welfare, led to an outpouring of mockery on Twitter. People posting jokes about other books “Children should watch the Wolf of Wall Street. It’s about a wolf who worked hard and became a stockbroker.#ShilpaShettyReviews,” a Twitterati wrote.

Meanwhile, reacting to twitter trolls, Shilpa Shetty said that she had never read Harry Potter or Animal Farm so she can’t be recommending such books to kids.

“Whilst I admire the writers of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Animal Farm I have never read these books because it sounds dumber and not my kind” She tweeted.

“So recommending them to kids is out of the question! Obviously some misunderstanding… Don’t want to get into it. This too shall pass” she said in another tweet.
