Two people have been arrested by Swedish police after the Friday truck attack in Stockholm that killed 4 and injured 15 people, Swedish public broadcaster SVT said, citing police sources. As per the SVT, the second man was detained in the northern suburb Hjulsta and is said to be linked to the man who was arrested earlier on Friday.
Swedish police verified earlier on Fri day that it had identified a person detained in another Stockholm suburb. He confessed to carrying out a deadly truck attack in the centre of the city, daily Aftonbladet said citing sources.
In what seems to be a terrorist attack, a truck had ploughed into a crowd on a shopping street and crashed into a department store in central Stockholm on Friday. The attack happened just before 3 pm local time and left many people injured.
“Our message will always be clear: you will not defeat us, you will not govern our lives, you will never, ever win,” Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, who had earlier described the assault as a terrorist attack, told a news conference.
Swedish Parliament and Stockholm subway were placed in lockdown. Police advised people to stay at home and avoid busy malls. All train services in and out of Stockholm Central Station were halted and people were evacuated, The New York Times reported
An eyewitness quoted by the CNN said the driver “put his foot on the gas and ran through the crowd.” “He came from Olof Palmes Street and drove down to Drottninggatan,” Veronica Durango told CNN in a phone interview.
“It was like he was driving through paper. It’s like it was nothing. I can’t even believe how a person could do such a thing. And then he just kept on going. I was in shock,” she added.
The attack is similar to what happened in Berlin and London. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
