UN climate conference: Delegates appealing to Trump to join the fight against global warming

The first UN climate conference after the historical Paris Agreement closed on Friday with the members appealing to US president-elect Donald Trump to join the fight against global warming.

Afraid of the possibility that the US could withdraw from the emission pact signed in Paris last year, countries rallied in support for the deal and said they would move ahead no matter what, AFP reported.

Delegates also invited Trump to Pacific Islands. Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama urged US to rescue Pacific Islands and the world from climate change.

“I renew my offer to President-elect Trump to come to Fiji and see the effects of climate change,” Bainimarama said.

Morocco, the host nation, Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar said the “message to the new American president is simply to say, ‘We count on your pragmatism and your spirit of commitment.”‘

During his election campaign, Trump said that he would cancel the Paris Agreement and withdraw US tax dollars from UN global warming programs.

Earlier, Trump had said that climate change is a Chinese hoax devised to make US manufacturing non-competitive.
