Following the extensive aerial inspection, the deep-sea hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines aircraft MH370 has been suspended, the Australian, Malaysian and Chinese governments said on Tuesday. The aircraft disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014. It had 239 passengers and crew on board at that time.

For years, the multimillion-dollar search was on by the Australia, Malaysia, and China in a bid to trace the aircraft. The process is said to have cost around AU$180m, paid for by the two countries Australia and Malaysia. China had donated AU$20m in support and equipment.

The plane “has not been located” in the 120,000 square kilometre (46,000 square mile) hunt area of the southern Indian Ocean, said a statement from the three nations.

“To date no new information has been discovered to determine the specific location of the aircraft. Accordingly, the underwater search for MH370 has been suspended.
