United Nation Day 2019: Theme, significance and celebration of the day

The United Nations Day was founded in 1945 to solve the issues of concern such as to educate people about human rights, and to mobilize political will and resources to mark global problems. Since 1948, every year United Nations Day is celebrated on October 24 and it marks the entry of force of the UN Charter. From 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended the day as public holiday observed by the Member state.

The 2019 theme of UN Day is ‘Our Planet. Our Future.’

To mark the occasion, a concert will be held in the General Assembly Hall at  United Nations Headquarters in New York at 4 P.M.

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will be represented by Dana Al Fardan, Hala Al-Emadi and Aisha. The first event, known as the United Nations Day, was the unity and military parade of the World War II Allies’ day initiated by US President Franklin Roosevelt on June 14, 1942, and six months from the UN Declaration. “New York at War” parade was seen in New York City.

Speaking over the UN Day 2019, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “United Nations Day highlights the enduring ideals of the Charter, which entered into force on this date 74 years ago. Amid stormy global seas, the Charter remains our shared moral anchor.”

António Guterres said, “At this time of turbo-charged change, the United Nations remains focused on the real problems of real people. We are working for fair globalization and bold climate action. We are pushing for human rights and gender equality — and saying ‘no” to hatred of any kind. And we are striving to maintain peace – while bringing life-saving aid to millions caught up in armed conflict. The United Nations itself is becoming ever more agile and accountable as we enhance support to countries.

He further adds, “Next year marks the Organization’s 75th anniversary. This milestone is a critical moment to shape our future, together. I invite you to join the conversation. Together, let us advance the well-being of ‘we the peoples’.”

Therefore, this day motivates and reinforces the achievements of humanity.
