On Thursday, UP police arrested the Former Cabinet member of Aligarh Muslim University Student Union (AMUSU), Farhan Zuberi, an activist who took part in protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Aligarh.

Farhan Zuberi was arrested on Thursday evening by UP police in Aligarh.

Farhan went out for some official work with his friend Ravish when the police held Farhan and took him to Madrak Thana which is at a distance of 12 kms from Aligarh and therefore they arrested him over there.

According to latest report, Farhan Zubairi has now been shifted to a thana in Aligarh.

Former President of AMU, Maskoor Usmani told Newsd, that amidst lockdown, the government is deliberately targeting the Muslim protestors who raised their voice against CAA.

“When the country is dealing with global coronavirus pandemic and the nation has been under a lockdown to save themselves from the deadly virus, the police is leaving no chance to arrest the activist who were involved in anti-CAA protest.”

He further added “that even in the pandemic Farhan was doing social work by helping the migrant labours. Farhan actively participated in CAA protest from Day 1 and he has been raising his voice for the changes that society needs and has been working for it.”

Maskoor added that “Everyone feels that they will be the next in line to be arrested for raising their voice.”

The lockdown has comfortably provided space for consequence-free actions and almost no accountability. Moreover, with national attention glued to the coronavirus and its aftermath, the Police may be viewing this situation as a free-pass to arrest the ones who stood for the right and raised their voice.
