US Military Pay Rise 2026: In January 2026, active-duty troops from all branches received a 3.8% increase in their basic pay. This raise came at a time when prices are still high and the military is trying hard to keep people from leaving the service.
This year’s pay hike applies equally to everyone. Last year the junior enlisted members received bigger raises than senior ranks, but that did not happen this time. Even though the 3.8% increase is lower than the 4.5% raise given in 2025, it is still one of the better pay increases seen in many years.
For the youngest troops, the extra money is easy to notice. An E-1 with less than two years in service now earns a little more than $2,400 each month as basic pay. An E-6 with over ten years of service now makes around $4,760 per month. Officers earn more. A newly commissioned officer starts at about $4,150 per month. A mid-career O-4 with long service can earn more than $9,400 per month. Still, basic pay alone does not show how much money service members really take home.

Allowances
Many troops depend heavily on allowances, and several of these benefits increased in 2026. The Basic Allowance for Housing went up by an average of 4.2% across the country. This came after two years of even larger housing increases. Housing pay depends on where a person lives, their rank, and whether they have a family. It follows local rent prices, not a national number.
Service members still pay about 5% of housing costs themselves, but the raise helps in places where rent and utility bills keep rising. Troops already living in areas where housing rates dropped will not lose money because they can keep their current allowance.
Food money also went up. The Basic Allowance for Subsistence increased by about 2.4%. This gives troops a little more help with grocery costs. Like housing money, food allowance is not taxed.
Other changes also came in 2026. The Family Separation Allowance rose from $250 to $300 per month. This helps troops who spend long time away from their families during deployments. Dislocation Allowance also increased to help with moving costs during duty station changes.

Retirees and Veterans to see Increases
Military retirees, veterans, and survivors also received higher payments. A 2.8% cost-of-living increase applies to retirement pay and many veteran benefits. This adjustment follows inflation data collected by the government.
Military pay increases depend on the Employment Cost Index, which tracks private-sector wages. Congress can change the final number, but for 2026 lawmakers allowed the planned raise to move forward without changes.
Defense officials are asking service members to carefully check their January Leave and Earnings Statements to make sure everything is correct.
