In a shocker to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Amruta Pandey, daughter-in-law of Uttar Pradesh BJP president Mahendra Nath Pandey joined the Congress party on Wednesday. Amruta joined the grand old party following her meeting with party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi.

“My first home is Congress and it’s like returning to my old house. With Priyanka Gandhi officially entering politics, I feel it will give a big boost to the Congress. I believe even I can now contribute something towards nation building,” Amruta was quoted by ABP News.

On why she is joining the Congress party, Amrita said that she has an old connection with the Gandhi family and the party. She further added that the upcoming era is of Congress, not Narendra Modi and that it remains uncertain if Modi will fight the next elections. On the question of fighting polls, Amrita said, “what ever be the decision of the party be, it’s acceptable to me. For now, our aim is to work with Priyanka Gandhi, we have good relations with former UP Chief Minister Kamlapati Tripathi,”.

Reportedly, she will be a part of Priyanka’s campaigning in Chunar area of Mirzapur district today.

The Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh will be among the most stretched out as it will be held in seven phases as announced by the Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora earlier this month. Uttar Pradesh has a total of 80 seats and is the state which sends most number of MPs to the Lok Sabha.
