VA Benefits Rise in 2026: Veterans will see the higher VA payment rates in May 2026 because the yearly cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, was set at 2.8%. The new amounts are not a special extra bonus. They are already part of the regular monthly VA compensation rates. The official VA rate tables show these updated payments as effective December 1, 2025, which is why the higher amount carries into the 2026 payments.
This increase applies to VA disability compensation, TDIU, Special Monthly Compensation, DIC, and other monthly payments linked to the yearly COLA update. VA also says its disability rates are matched to the same COLA percentage used for Social Security benefits.

2026 Monthly Rates for Veterans with No Dependents
For a veteran with no dependents, the 2026 monthly rates are:
- 10 percent disability rating: $180.42
- 20 percent disability rating: $356.67
- 30 percent disability rating: $552.47
- 40 percent disability rating: $795.84
- 50 percent disability rating: $1,132.90
- 60 percent disability rating: $1,435.01
- 70 percent disability rating: $1,808.44
- 80 percent disability rating: $2,102.14
- 90 percent disability rating: $2,362.30
- 100 percent disability rating: $3,938.57
That means a veteran at 10% gets just over $180 each month, while a veteran rated at 100% gets just under $3,940 before any extra money for dependents or special compensation is added.
Why some Veterans get more
Some veterans get more than the basic rate. This can happen if they have a spouse, children, dependent parents, or qualify for Special Monthly Compensation. VA says people with a 10% to 20% rating do not get a higher amount for dependents, but veterans with 30% or higher ratings can receive extra money for eligible family members.
The VA special monthly compensation page also shows 2026 SMC rates, with SMC-K at $139.87 and SMC-Q at $67.00. The page says these current SMC rates are effective December 1, 2025
