New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham helped his side to put an enormous target of 372 runs on board by hitting 5 sixes in a single over of Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera.

New Zealand has won the first ODI played against Sri Lanka at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. Thanks to the Man of the Match Martin Guptill (138) who set things up by hitting a fantastic century who was accompanied by Captain Kane Williamson (76) and Ross Taylor (54).

New Zealand batted their innings dominantly after losing their first wicket, Colin Munro in 5th over at a score of 23, after which Guptill-Williamson maintained a partnership of 163 runs.

In the 49th over of New Zealand’s batting, James Neesham who made a comeback into the team almost after 18 months displayed an explosive inning by hitting 5 sixes of Thisara Perera’s over. Although, Neesham missed his half-century but remained unbeaten scoring 47 runs off just 13 balls. He also had a chance of scoring fastest half-century in ODI cricket, the record is currently held by AB de Villiers, who scored his half-century in 16 balls.

Kiwis put up a target of 372 runs for Sri Lanka in return Sri Lanka fell 46 runs short to achieve the target. James Neesham who displayed a fantastic inning by bat also took 3 wickets with his bowling. Neesham took two of the most important wickets of both the Sri Lankan openers.

Sri Lanka’s openers Niroshan Dickwella (76) and Danushka Gunathilaka (43) gave a really promising start to their side by scoring a partnership of 119 runs. After which Kusal Perera took the charge, scoring 102 runs off just 86 deliveries. But the middle and lower order of Sri Lankan team seemed to struggle in front of New Zealand’s bowling attack and collapsed at the total score of 326 runs with one over remaining.

The second ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand will be played on the same ground and Sri Lankan captain who praised his batsmen expects a better performance by bowlers in the next game.
