Indian business tycoon Vijay Mallya who is wanted in India for defaulting on loans worth Rs 9,000 crore related to Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) that was suspended in 2012, has been arrested by the Scotland Yard in London on Tuesday. He will be produced before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Mallya, who was absconding from India from March 2, 2016 is likely to be extradited and a team from CBI is soon to visit London to probe into the matter. He has been arrested by the local police as per reports.

The courts in UK will examine, if Mallya’s offence is extraditable or not.

His arrest comes soon after India, on February 8, handed a formal extradition request to the British government to bring back Mallya. Mallya’s lawyers had been anticipating the arrest and had been preparing for it.

However, according to lawyer HPf Ranina, an arrest does not necessarily mean a stronger case for extradition. Ranina also added that we must wait to see what is covered in the arrest and if Mallya will be challenging it in the court for a legal battle after which extradition will occur.

Despite innumerable summons from the Indian government, Mallya failed to appear in court. Reportedly, in last year September Mallya tried to return to India, however, the enforcement directorate in October had said that Mallya had no intentions of coming back to India and that his passport was revoked due to his conduct.
