Viral Delhi Parking QR Code Scam: Man Questions Fake Payment QR on MCD; Razorpay Co-Founder Responds

Viral Delhi Parking QR Code Scam: A short video has ignited a storm of online reactions and serious questions about digital payments at parking lots in the capital. What appears to be a routine parking-fee transaction, under the banner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), is being flagged as a possible “QR-code scam” and fintech players like Razorpay are now responding publicly.

A‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ video that has gone viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) shows how a car owner in a parking lot managed by MCD in Delhi is scanning the QR code given by a parking attendant. The scan reveals the beneficiary name as “Vinod Kumar”, hence the payment does not seem to be going to MCD or a known parking contractor.

The attendant has a device from Razorpay but the QR code he shows seems to be from a different payment service. The driver keeps ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌asking:

“Why is this Razorpay POS showing a PhonePe QR?”, “Why is the beneficiary name not MCD?” indicating suspicion.

At one point the driver says angrily:

Pagal bana rahe ho? MCD ka parking hai toh MCD ka naam aana chahiye… Maathe pe ch***ya likha hai mere? Main Vinod Kumar ko paise kyun dunga?

Shashank Kumar (Co-founder of Razorpay) Reacts

After the video went viral, Shashank Kumar took to social media (X) to respond. He said:

In the next software upgrade we will disable gallery access unless really needed for the seller.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma (Founder of Paytm)

He also responded, by pointing to Paytm’s own hardware (Soundbox) which provides an audible name confirmation when payment is made, as a protective feature against such misuse.

In other words: both the fintech ecosystem and payment device manufacturers are being forced to reckon with how offline payments (parking, small vendors) can become weak links in the chain.
