Walgreens: Low drug reimbursement rates and less spending by customers have been bad for Walgreens and many other pharmacy chains in the US. Tim Wentworth has made some changes that are starting to work since he became CEO last year. However, more needs to be done to make things better for the company.

Walgreens, which is based in Deerfield, Illinois, said in June that it would be closing many of its failed stores across the country. The company said on a recent earnings call that it plans to close about 14% of its 8,600 stores in the US.

It did not, however, anticipate staff reductions, which is already stressful. Walgreens will instead reassign impacted employees to different departments.

Walgreens has announced plans to close 500 stores by the end of the year as part of its strategy to optimize its operations. Over the next three years, the company will shut down a total of 1,200 underperforming locations that are not generating positive cash flow.

According to CFO Manmohan Mahajan, the company will focus on closing stores that it owns or those with leases expiring in the near future. CEO Tim Wentworth emphasized that while the decision to close stores is difficult, they remain confident in their ability to continue serving customers effectively.

According to AS News, the CEO intends to shift the company’s focus of growth to its core business lines and reposition it as a retail pharmacy. “We are confident that this turnaround will result in significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term, even though it will take time.”

Wentworth has announced plans to fire several mid-level executives and implement a $1 billion cost-cutting program since assuming the top position. Walgreens informed investors on Tuesday that the company has so far lowered its net debt by $1.9 billion.
