What is DIGIPIN: India’s conventional PIN system, introduced in 1972, covers large areas with a single code (like an entire town or a part of a city). This often causes ambiguity in addresses, delayed or misrouted deliveries, and problems in verifying addresses digitally. To tackle these issues India Post launched an initiative called DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number).
What is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN is a digital code of ten characters, which is alphanumeric and will be generated based on the precise geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) of a particular address. DIGIPIN addresses the above needs by providing location-specific accuracy made possible by innovative digital mapping technology using Geographic Information System (GIS).
The Ministry of Communications declared DIGIPIN as part of the new system to modernise India’s addressing infrastructure on May 27, 2025. It serves as a foundational concept to “Address-as-a-Service” (AaaS) for citizens, businesses, and government bodies to use validated digital locations in a secure, accurate, and standardised manner.
How to Find Your DIGIPIN Code Online Using Your Phone’s Location?

- AB: Country/State or Zone Code
- 12: District or City Identifier
- CD: Street or district segment
- 34: Building/plot Identifier
- EF: Unit/ flat/ floor/ sequence code information

- WB: West Bengal
