It was the inaugural day of the ISSF World Cup 2019 in New Delhi and oh what a start it was for the Indian contingent, in the 10m air rifle women category not only did the Indian hope Apurvi Chandela won the gold medal but she even broke the World Record with a whopping score of 252.9.

Apurvi Chandela was the only Indian to qualify for 10m air rifle final. The 26-year-old was placed fourth with a total score of 629.3 while Anjum Moudgil and Elavenil Valarivan – finished 12th (628) and 30th (625.3) respectively. China’s Zhao Ruozhu (251.8) and Xu Hong (230.4) won silver and bronze respectively.

Apurvi Chandela was also the only Indian to make it to the first final of the season-opening International Shooting Sports Federation World Cup in New Delhi as she qualified for the women’s 10m air rifle final on Saturday.

The 1993 born came into limelight when she won gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow in the 10 metre air rifle event. She is the daughter of hotelier Kuldeep Singh Chandela and Bindu Rathore. Chandela did her schooling from Mayo College Girls School Beawar & Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls’ School, Jaipur before doing Sociology honours from Jesus and Mary College, Delhi University.

Chandela qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics but couldn’t grab a top ten position. In the 2018 Asian games, she paired with Ravi Kumar to win bronze medal in the 10 metre air rifle event.

This is not the first time when Chandela has achieved success at the ISSF level. In the 2015 events, she had brought home a bronze and a silver medal.
