“My tenure on the board saw momentous events like the merger of the bank with HDFC Ltd that created a conglomerate under the Bank. This strategic initiative made HDFC Bank the second largest Bank in the country. Though, the benefits of merger are yet to fully fructify,” he concluded.
Who Is Atanu Chakraborty?

Atanu Chakraborty is a distinguished former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who transitioned into the corporate world after decades in public service. A 1985-batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, he held some of the most critical financial policy roles in the Government of India, including serving as the Economic Affairs Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.
Chakraborty used his bureaucratic position to help develop India’s fiscal policies and budgetary processes along with economic management systems. His experience included working in multiple fields which included the petroleum and infrastructure and finance industries and representing India at international organizations such as the World Bank.
He possesses a strong academic foundation which includes engineering studies from NIT Kurukshetra and an MBA degree from the University of Hull. His combination of administrative skills and financial expertise made him suitable for executive positions in India’s business and banking industries.
His Role at HDFC Bank
Chakraborty began his corporate leadership career after he left government service in 2020. He became the part-time chairman of HDFC Bank in 2021 after receiving his appointment to this position at one of India’s largest private banking institutions.

The bank experienced one of its most important periods during his leadership because HDFC Bank and HDFC Ltd. completed their merger, which resulted in a new financial institution that acquired vast resources and a large customer base.

Why Did He Quit HDFC Bank?
The events following Atanu Chakraborty resignation during March 2026 surprised both financial markets and regulatory bodies and all investors. The reason, however, was clearly stated by him: a conflict between his personal values and certain practices within the bank.
He stated that his decision stemmed from a specific reason which he described through the following statement. Multiple reports confirm that his concerns had been building over time, suggesting a prolonged mismatch rather than a sudden fallout.
Chakraborty did not accuse the bank of any illegal activities. He explained the issue involved differing ideological views which drove his decision-making process. He stated, “Some of the events and practices within the bank that I have observed over the past two years are inconsistent with my personal values and ethics.”
Was There a Governance Crisis?
The bank and its regulators responded to the resignation situation by taking immediate action to reduce public anxiety.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported that it discovered no significant issues which affected the bank’s governance and operational functions, thus establishing institutional trust. HDFC Bank confirmed that his departure from the bank occurred because of the reasons which he presented in his resignation letter.
Analysts believe the reaction was driven more by uncertainty than by fundamentals. The chairman’s resignation which he justified through “ethical differences” created an automatic need to investigate internal operations despite the absence of specific details.
