After since the long-continued row over two Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, the nation has been eye-struck and is waiting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led high-powered panel meeting for selection of the next Director of CBI.

Selection Committee has shortlisted 12 candidates for the new Director of CBI. Gujarat director-general of police Shivanand Jha and National Investigation Agency director-general YC Modi, both considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi since his days as Gujarat chief minister, are being seen as favourites for the post.

Among the 12, lists the name of IPS officer Rina Mitra. Mitra, if chosen, would be the first woman to head the CBI.

Here’s a brief look into Rina Mitra’s records so far:

  • Rina is a 1983 batch IPS officer and is currently posted at the Ministry of Home Affairs as Special Secretary (Internal Security).
  • She has been awarded Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1999 and President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2008.
  • Mitra headed the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, an organisation tasked to combat organised wildlife crime
  • She has experience of working in the CBI where she spent nearly five years and had a long tenure in Madhya Pradesh state vigilance where she handled serious corruption cases.

Mitra appear to have brightened because she has a clean record, a non-controversial image and has experience of working in the CBI.

The names of the shortlisted candidates have been sent to the Central Vigilance Commission for clearance and they will be placed before the three-member selection committee of the Prime Minister, the leader of the largest Opposition party and the Chief Justice of India.

The committee is scheduled to meet on January 24 to finalise the name of the new director.

A 1979-batch IPS officer, Verma was locked in a bitter tussle with agency’s Special Director Rakesh Asthana, a 1984-batch IPS officer.
