Why Flights From Jewar Airport to Lucknow Cost More Than Delhi IGI Despite Shorter Distance?

Early IndiGo fares from Noida International Airport have surprised travellers, with some tickets costing more than Delhi flights due to higher airport charges and limited airline competition at Jewar.

Jewar Airport Fares: Noida International Airport at Jewar has started getting a lot of attention even before full passenger service begins. The reason is simple. Early ticket checks from IndiGo have made many travellers pause and look twice. On some routes, the prices from Jewar are being discussed as higher than the same routes from Delhi’s IGI Airport. The airport is set to begin commercial flights on June 15, with IndiGo as the first airline to fly from there.

Higher Prices

The strange part is that many people expected Jewar flights to be cheaper. Uttar Pradesh charges 1% VAT on aviation turbine fuel, while Delhi charges 25%, so the new airport was supposed to have some cost relief. But reports say that higher airport charges, passenger user charges, and aeronautical fees at Noida International Airport are eating up that advantage. The Economic Times and The Times of India both reported that fares from Jewar and Delhi are, in some cases, nearly the same, while the airport’s extra charges make the new airport less price-friendly than expected.

Initial fare checks have also created debate because travel from Jewar to Lucknow was reported around Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,500, while Delhi to Lucknow was seen around Rs 3,600 to Rs 4,500 in the same period. At the same time, later checks on other routes showed equal fares from both airports for some June 24 flights, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Jammu, and Amritsar. So the picture is not one clean number. It looks more like a mixed scene, with pricing changing by route and charge structure.

The Operator pushes back

The airport operator has defended the pricing. It said the charges are “in line with those at comparable greenfield and brownfield airports in the country.” The company also said its tariff plan is meant to recover investment over a longer period, and that faster passenger processing could help airlines keep their own running costs lower in the long run. Business Standard also reported that Air India and IndiGo have raised concerns about the steep charges.

The fare issue has now moved beyond aviation talk and into politics too. The BJP MLA from Jewar, Dhirendra Singh, has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to step in.
