In a shameful incident, two men allegedly drugged and gangraped a 21-year-old woman in southwest Delhi’s Hari Vihar near Dwarka on Wednesday night after abducting her, police said.

The woman, a resident of Gurgaon, was injured while trying to escape through a bathroom window of the flat she was confined in, police said. One of the suspects – Himmat – was also injured trying to stop her, they added.

This is one of more than 2,000 rapes reported till December 15 this year in Delhi, notorious for its poor women’s safety records.

The woman told the police she was waiting near Gurgaon’s old bus stop around 5.30pm on Wednesday evening when she met Himmat. They started talking and soon after, the other suspect Sunil arrived in his car.

The two men offered her a ride home and offered her a drink laced with drugs when she had sat inside, police said. She fell unconscious and the two men took her to a flat and took turns to rape her, sources added.

“Sunil and Himmat were arrested after the case was registered. Sunil owns the Ritz car and he earlier worked for Uber,” said Surender Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (southwest).

He said a case of abduction, drugging and gang rape was registered against Himmat and Sunil, who was using his vehicle as a private taxi and had hired a man called Nitin as driver.

Sunil’s car was earlier registered on the Uber cab aggregation platform, he added. Attempts to get a comment from Uber were unsuccessful.

The third-floor flat where the alleged crime took place belonged to Nitin but he wasn’t present and Sunil had the keys to the place, police added.

Police said Sunil locked the woman with Himmat in the room around 8pm and left for some work.

An hour later, the woman regained consciousness and attempted to flee through the bathroom window. Himmat rushed into the bathroom to stop her. She lost her balance and fell fifteen meters down the shaft and so did Himmat, officials said. They suffered injuries in their back and legs.

Local residents heard the crash and called the police control room, thinking thieves had fallen into the shaft while trying to break into one of the flats. “We took them to DDU hospital from where the woman was shifted to Safdarjung hospital for better treatment,” said a police officer.

Himmat was arrested from the hospital and his interrogation led to the arrest of Sunil. Police also seized the cab.
