Recently, a first-of-its-kind treatment happened in the country wherein a sixty-year-old woman got her eyesight back through the usage of her foot nerves. Mira Dhar had a viral infection three years ago which in turn affected her right eye. She lost the hope of seeing clearly again from her right eye but a magical treatment fulfilled her hope.

The resident of Kolkata, Dhar, got her eyesight back when the nerves from her foot were used for the treatment. It is after her first corneal transplant failed. However, she has fully recovered and is now back home with her family.

Cataract and Refractive Surgeon at Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, Dr Harshavardhan Ghorpade said, “While we could use nerves from the hand, the ones from the foot is superficial and easy to access”.

Talking about the entire process he informed that the corneal transplant, after removing the sensory nerve called the sural nerve from the foot, was performed y Dr Vinod Vij. The nerve, along with the sensory nerves of her forehead, was then connected to the cornea.

The procedure was first time carried out in India, claimed the Doctors. While the operation was performed three months back, Dhar’s cornea has now completely healed and her sight is normal.
