Zambia Independence Day History
The journey towards independence for Zambia was fraught with difficulty. Prior to attaining ‘independent’ status, the nation encountered outstanding challenges and complex circumstances that demanded resolution.
Due to its lack of maritime access, Zambia remained unexplored by European settlers until the late 19th century. Cecil Rhodes, the leader of the British South African Company, obtained mineral rights in the region in 1888 through the signing of a treaty with the supreme chief of the vineyard. As a result of stifling tribal uprisings, the British achieved absolute control over the region. The name given to this region was North-Western Rhodesia.
Following the conclusion of World War II, decolonization commenced in Africa. In 1953, the United Kingdom established the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which included Northern Rhodesia (currently Zambia), Southern Rhodesia (presently Zimbabwe), and Nyasaland (currently Malawi). The inhabitants of Northern Rhodesia vehemently opposed this course of action and vehemently opposed the formation of this federation. The federation precipitated the formation of two nationalist parties, and between 1960 and 1961, widespread strikes commenced. December 1963 ultimately saw the dissolution of the federation due to the forceful opposition from Northern Rhodesia. After general elections were conducted in January 1964, President Kenneth Kaunda assumed office on October 24, 1964, a span of ten months. The President renamed the country the Republic of Zambia.
Independence Day is celebrated with tremendous zeal and rousing enthusiasm in the Republic of Zambia. Zambia has the opportunity to honor its Solidarity and Peace Convention, whose motto is “One Zambia, One Nation,” and to reaffirm its commitment to a democratic future that guarantees the preservation of individual liberties and effective governance.
