24 killed, many injured in stampede in Varanasi

24 people were killed and many were injured in a stampede at a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi on Saturday.Thousands of followers of the Jai Gurudev sect had gathered at a venue near the historic Rajghat bridge on the river Ganga.

The stampede broke out as the venue was overcrowded, said a senior police officer. The police are investigating crowd management and have said that it will take action against whoever responsible.

The followers of religious leader Jai Gurudev were on their way to Domri village on the banks of Ganga to take part in the two-day camp. The stampede occurred when people were moving downward from the Rajghat bridge causing deaths of men and women.

Five of the injured are stated to be in a serious condition. UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakhs each for kin of those killed in the stampede and Rs 50,000 each for the critically injured.
