India is known for its diversity and culture. The Indian festivals are something people wait for all year long. Let’s check what the month of August has stored in for us.

Here’s a list of national and international days in August 2019:

  • International Beer Day

International Beer Day is observed on the first Friday of August. It was originally started in Santa Cruz, California in 2007. The purpose behind the day is to gather with friends and enjoy.

  • Friendship Day

Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August and in 2019 and this year it is observed on August 4. A tradition of dedicating a day to honor friends began in the US in 1935. Various countries including India also celebrate the day.

  • National Climbing Day

Every year on August 1, National Climbing Day is observed. It was established in honor of the author’s son Bobby Mathews and his friend Josh Madigan for successfully climbing the 46 High Peaks of New York State’s Adirondack Mountains.

  • Yorkshire Day

This day is celebrated on August 1. It is the UK’s largest country and it is celebrated to honor the history of the country to its resident.

  • S. Coast Guard Day

Every year on August 4, this day is marked to honor the establishment of the Revenue Marine on August 4, 1790, by the Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton.

  • Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Day is observed on August 6 every year. On this day the atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

  • Quit India Movement Day

The movement was launched by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in the All India Congress Committee session in Bombay on August 8, 1942. The movement is also known as August Movement or August Kranti.

  • Nagasaki Day

On 9 August 1945, a second bomb was dropped by the United States on Japan at Nagasaki and the bomb is also known as Fat Man.  Three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, this bomb was dropped.

  • International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples

Every year on August 9, International Day of the World Indigenous Peoples is celebrated to encourage people from around the world to spread the UN’s message on the protection and promotion of the rights of the Indigenous peoples.

  • International Youth Day

Every year on August 12, International Youth Day is observed around the globe to focus on the development and protection of youth in the society. The theme of the day this year is Transforming Education.

  • International Lefthanders Day

Lefthanders Day is observed every year on August 13 and this day was first celebrated in 1976. The day raises awareness about the problems and difficulty that is faced by left-handed persons.

  • Pakistan Independence Day

Youm-e-Azadi or Pakistan Independence Day is observed every year on August 14. On this day Pakistan achieved Independence and was declared sovereign nation following the end of British rule in 1947.

  • National Day of Mourning (Bangladesh)

National Day of mourning in Bangladesh is observed on August 15 every year. On this day, Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated along with most of his family members.

  • Independence Day in India

Every year, India celebrates Independence Day as on this day India got freedom from British rule. It is the day when a new beginning is marked and a new era begins from British colonialism of more than 200 years.

  • Victory over Japan Day

World War II was ended in 1945 and celebrates the victory over Japan. On August 15, 1945, the US president Harry S Truman declared the day as Victory Over Japan Day at a White House press conference.

  • Bennington Battle Day

On August 16, Bennington Battle Day is observed annually to honor the Battle of Bennington which took place on August 16, 1777. It was a battle of the American Revolutionary War which was part of the Saratoga campaign.

  • Indonesian Independence Day

Every year on August 17, Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated. This day is celebrated as the declaration of Independence from Dutch colonization in 1945.

  • World Photography Day

Every year on August 19, World Photography Day is marked to raise awareness about the importance of photography.

  • World Humanitarian Day

This day is annually observed on August 19 around the world to pay the tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service. The day also honors the work of women in crises throughout the world.  This year the campaign for the day is #WomenHumanitarian.

  • World Mosquito Day

Every year on August 20, World Mosquito Day is observed every year to commemorate the British Doctor, Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.

  • Sadbhavna Diwas

This day is marked every year on August 20 to commemorate the memory of late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Sadbhavna means goodwill and bonafide.

  • Indian Akshay Urja Day

Indian Akshay Urja Day is celebrated on 20 August every year to raise awareness about the development of renewable energy in India. It is celebrated since 2004. This day commemorates the birthday of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

  • International Day of Remembrance of Slave Trade and its abolition

Every year this day is observed on August 23 to remind people about the tragedy of the slave trade in memorializing the transatlantic slave trade.

  • Women’s Equality Day

This day is observed on August 26 and it commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S  Constitution which granted the women the right to vote. In 1878 the amendment was the first time introduced and in 1971 the U.S Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day.

  • National Sports Day

Every year on August 29, National Sports Day is celebrated every year to honor the birthday of Dhyan Chand a field of a hockey player. The day is also known as Rashtriya Khel Divas.

  • Small Industry Day

On August 30 every year, Small Industry Day is observed to support and promote small scale industry.

  • Hari Merdeka (Malaysia National Day)

Malaysia National Day is celebrated on August 31. In 1957, the Federation of Malaya (predecessor to Malaysia) gained independence from Britain
