Basant Panchami festival is celebrated to honour Goddess Sarawati, the goddess of knowledge, music, art, science, and literature. Basant generally means spring and Panchami is the fifth day of the spring season. As per religious beliefs, worshipping the Goddess brings enlightenment of knowledge, gets us rid of lethargy, sluggishness, and slumber.
This day is known to women for wearing traditional yellow saris while children take part in cultural programs and families share prasad with each other.
Some schools and colleges hold Puja on Basant Panchami. Clay idols of the Maa Saraswati with moon crescent, riding a swan or seated on a lotus are brought home.
Flowers, fruits, and sweets are placed near Puja Pandal. Customary khichdi (a mixture of rice and lentils) is a traditional prasad for Saraswati Puja.
