Juneteenth 2023: Juneteenth commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States and is also known as Emancipation Day. It occurs annually on June 19th. It Commemorates the Day Union Troops in Galveston, Texas Announced the Emancipation of Slaves. The messages were delivered more than two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1860, there were nearly 4 million slaves in the United States.
Texas was the first state to declare Juneteenth a state holiday in 1980. Now, all states except four celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth is not, however, a federal holiday in the United States. The US Senate recognised “Juneteenth Independence Day,” but the House has not.
Many consider the celebration to be the second Independence Day of the country. Americans celebrate anniversaries with family celebrations and gatherings. On June 19, African Americans across the United States celebrate their freedom from slavery. Also known as “Juneteenth Black Independence Day,”
On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln more than two years prior.
