The application process is easy, and you can do it online or by mail. To start the application process, applicants must give their Social Security number, information about their sponsor, and specifics about the school or training centre they want to attend. For direct deposit, you also need to give information about your bank account.

If you want to apply by mail, fill out VA Form 22-5490 and send it to the processing office in your area. The address of this office is easy to find on the last page of the form. Have you signed up for school yet? These details should be sent to the VA by your certification officer, so make sure they know about them.

Eligbility

The veteran or service member must fulfil one of the following requirements to be eligible for DEA benefits:

  • Be permanently disabled due to a service-connected disability
  • Have died in the line of duty or as a result of a service-connected disability
  • Be missing in action, captured, or held by hostile forces for more than 90 days
  • Be receiving treatment for a permanent service-connected disability with an expected discharge

Guidelines for spouses and kids

Eligibility for children under Chapter 35 (DEA) is independent of marital status.

They can’t use DEA benefits, though, while they are in the military. Also, if they get a dishonourable discharge, they won’t be able to get these benefits after they leave the service.

On the other hand, spouses can get Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) along with DEA benefits. On the other hand, DEA eligibility usually ends if the spouse gets divorced or marries someone else after the veteran dies. There are some exceptions. Benefits may be reinstated if the remarriage happened after January 1, 2004, and the spouse was at least 57 years old.
