BCCI’s Special Rules for Injuries: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has strict rules for all 10 teams, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allows some exceptions. These exceptions help teams replace players in special situations, like injuries or withdrawals.

One important rule allows teams to include a short-term replacement wicketkeeper if all their registered wicketkeepers are unavailable. For this, the team needs approval from the BCCI. The replacement can only stay until the original wicketkeeper recovers.

If the team has already used its full quota of overseas players, the replacement wicketkeeper must be an Indian player. Interestingly, in the last 17 years of the IPL, no team has used this rule. It is only meant for emergencies.

Teams can also replace players who are unavailable for the rest of the season due to injuries, national duties, or other reasons. These replacements must come from the registered available player pool. This pool includes players who registered for the mega auction but went unsold.

To become a replacement, a player must first withdraw from the team’s 12th group stage match due to injury or illness. The BCCI and the player’s home country’s medical team must confirm the player’s unavailability.

If a player leaves the IPL for national duty or doesn’t have a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their national board, the team can replace them for the rest of the season.

Salary Rules for Replacements

The replacement player’s salary cannot be more than the salary of the player who withdrew. Match fees are not included in the replacement player’s salary for the season. However, if the replacement player continues to play for the rest of the season, their salary will be included.

Before naming any replacement, teams must get approval from the BCCI.

These rules ensure that teams can continue to compete even if they loose a players. They also make sure that replacements are fair and follow strict guidelines. While the short-term wicketkeeper replacement rule has never been used, it is there to help teams in emergencies.
