Weather in Mumbai: For the moment, the city is under an orange alert for intense precipitation. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Maharashtra’s Mumbai is likely to receive heavier rainfall in the next few days. The typical southwest monsoon will be responsible for this shift in weather pattern, as the monsoon is poised to return after a brief hiatus.
The first main rain-bearing system arrived over Kerala on May 24, the soonest arrival of the monsoon over the Indian mainland since 2009, when it arrived on May 23.
Aired by vigorous low-pressure systems set over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, the monsoon made swift progress in the coming days, reaching areas as far as central Maharashtra, covering Mumbai, and the entire northeast by May 29, according to PTI.
Weather in Mumbai
It remained down from May 28-29, until June 10-11 before turning back on. The delayed onset of monsoon coupled with a sudden buildup of extremely hot, dry air from the northwest forced the onset of heatwave conditions over most of northwestern and central India starting June 8-9.

Season Safety and Precautions to take
Save Keep yourself dry and comfortable
- Protect yourself with a nice umbrella or rain poncho when you go outside.
- Wear quick-dry or water-resistant clothes and shoes to avoid discomfort and fungal infections caused by moisture.
Outlast the humidity
- If your destination doesn’t supply them, then bring your own hand fan or small personal fan to help you deal with that sticky heat that comes between the rain storms.
- Stay hydrated—drink 2–3 liters of water per day to replace losses from sweating and humidity.
Cool strategically
- Stay away from alcohol and caffeinated beverages. They’ll dehydrate you even more.
- Use a gentle moisturizer post-bath/shower to avoid drying out skin in air-conditioned environments.
Protect against infectious disease
- Keep hands clean by washing them frequently with soap and water, ideally after each rainy commute.
- When riding transit or in crowded transit stations, use antiseptic wipes or hand sanitizer.
- Have a travel pack of tissues, mild immunity boosters (such as vitamin C) and pain medicine (such as paracetamol) on hand for any unexpected chills or sickness.
Travel Mindfully
- Roads and sidewalks become ice rinks. Wear footwear that provides traction.
- Plan for longer travel times. Typhoons and long-lasting rain events will cause major traffic disruption.
- If you’re walking or driving, be careful of stranded water and potholes.
Home protections
- Use dehumidifiers or air conditioning to keep indoor humidity low enough that mold doesn’t grow.
- Regularly inspect and maintain drainage to avoid seepage, flooding, and/or encroachment, paying particular attention to areas around windows and entrances.
Prepare for rainy, humid week ahead. You can be relatively comfortable and safe with the right rain gear, a little forethought to hydration, and a few basic precautions to your health.
