West Bengal School Holiday on July 6: West Bengal has made July 6, 2026, a full public holiday across the state. The day is being kept to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The state Finance Department issued the notification for this holiday, and reports say the order was made under the usual legal rule used for public holidays in the state.

This means schools, colleges, state government offices, urban local bodies, rural local bodies, government corporations, state undertakings, and government-aided institutions will stay shut for the day. The holiday is meant to honour Mookerjee’s role in the state and in the country. The official notice also describes him as “one of the most illustrious sons of this State”.

What will Stay Closed

Because of the holiday, government work and school-related activity will stop for the day across West Bengal. State offices and educational institutions will not run as usual. That gives students, teachers, office workers, and people in local government bodies a day off in remembrance of Mookerjee’s birth anniversary. The holiday notification was issued as a statewide order, so it applies broadly across public institutions under the state’s control.

The date is also important because it comes soon after another state observance earlier in the month. On July 1, West Bengal had already announced a half-day holiday for National Doctors’ Day. That earlier order was linked to the birth anniversary of former chief minister Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
