BTS’ RM Shares His Thoughts on Dating: BTS leader RM has offered one of his most personal interviews in recent years reflecting on the pressures of leading the world’s biggest boy band, his lifelong hunt for “normality” and also the kind of person he thinks he could fall in love with. The candid chat, released this week on designer Bella Freud’s Fashion Neurosis podcast has already started a lot of talk among fans because it shows the K-pop star beyond the spotlight in a more inward way than people usually get.

In the interview, RM, whose real name is Kim Nam-joon, looked back on almost 15 years as BTS’ leader. He admitted that his way of leading has changed a great deal since the group’s earliest days.

Instead of trying to steer every situation, RM said he now views leadership as making room for others and also accepting that each member has a different personality. “I’ve learned the balance from my parents,” RM said, adding that he often felt like “a small clock pin going back and forth” between their perspectives. “They were such great parents to me,” he concluded.

‘I just wanted to be normal’

One of the interview’s most talked-about moments came when RM discussed his complicated relationship with the idea of being “normal.”

The rapper said he became obsessed with living an ordinary life despite spending much of his adulthood as a global celebrity. However, he realised that the more he chased normality, the further it seemed to move away. “The best way to reveal your real things is the art itself. For me, it’s music,” he said, explaining that he pours even his fears and “demons” into his work. RM also admitted that social media has affected his reading habits. “Social media keeps making me not to read books. It’s getting harder,” he said.

Instead of constantly comparing himself with ordinary people, RM said he is learning to stop pursuing an impossible definition of “normal” and accept the unique life he has lived as an artist. The reflection resonated with many fans, as RM has often spoken openly about balancing fame with his personal identity.

RM also spoke about relationships and the personality traits he finds attractive.

Asked what kind of person he could fall in love with, the BTS leader said he is drawn to someone who can balance seriousness with a sharp sense of humour. According to RM, he appreciates people who understand life’s deeper emotions but can also make him laugh, describing that combination as especially appealing.

While RM did not discuss his personal dating life or confirm being in a relationship, his remarks offered a rare glimpse into the qualities he values in a romantic partner.

He explained that when he was younger, he believed he needed one clear image or personality. Over time, however, he realised that every person is full of contradictions, and accepting those complexities has become an important part of his personal growth.

BTS New Chapter

RM’s interview comes as BTS continues its activities following the members’ completion of South Korea’s mandatory military service. The group has recently spoken about rediscovering its identity while working on new music together, with RM acknowledging that the members are still navigating what the next era of BTS should look like.
