Police have reportedly tapped into provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) that deal with intentional insult, public mischief and defamation, the reports say. The accusations are still being looked into and until now no court has actually established guilt.
What Is a Zero FIR?
A Zero FIR is basically a First Information Report that can be filed at any police station, regardless of where the alleged offence took place. Once it s registered, it is then transferred to the police station that holds territorial jurisdiction for the matter. The whole idea is to prevent legal action from getting stuck or delayed, especially in urgent situations. Police invoked Sections 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 353(1) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(1) (defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Since the alleged incident took place in Delhi, the Zero FIR will be transferred to the Delhi Police for further investigation.
Political Reactions
The case has drawn political attention. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das defended Ruchika Singh, arguing that the legal action raises broader questions about freedom of expression and the treatment of political dissent. Meanwhile, leaders from the ruling BJP have criticised the alleged remarks and supported police action.
As of now, the matter remains under investigation by the Delhi Police after the transfer of the Zero FIR. Authorities have not announced any final findings, and further legal proceedings are expected based on the outcome of the investigation.
