Parthiv Patel New Chief Selector: Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel is at the centre of fresh speculation after posting a short message on X on September 18. His post had the words “Coming soon. I’m in.” with a cricket field graphic. It came at a time when the BCCI is reviewing the future of the men’s selection committee.
Reports have linked Parthiv with the chief selector’s job if Ajit Agarkar doesn’t continue. However, the BCCI hasn’t officially announced Parthiv as the next selector. The latest update after the September 18 AGM is that the board has authorised its office-bearers to take a call on the selection committee’s future.

Parthiv’s social media message spread quickly among cricket fans. Some connected it with the BCCI chief selector position, while others felt it could point towards a coaching role.
The timing of the post added more interest. A BCCI review meeting had earlier been held in Mumbai with head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and VVS Laxman among those attending. Agarkar wasn’t present because he was out of station and couldn’t join online due to connectivity issues, according to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
Parthiv Patel’s Cricket Career
Parthiv made his Test debut against England at Trent Bridge in 2002 when he was only 17 years and 153 days old. He became the youngest Test wicketkeeper at that time.
He played 25 Tests, 38 ODIs and two T20Is for India before retiring from all forms of cricket in December 2020. BCCI records also show that he played 194 first-class matches and 193 List A games.
Parthiv also had a strong domestic career with Gujarat. As captain, he guided the team to its first Ranji Trophy title in the 2016-17 season. He later finished his IPL career with 139 matches after representing six franchises.

BCCI Chief Selector Eligibility Criteria
According to BCCI’s published eligibility rules, a candidate must meet these conditions:
- Retirement Requirement: The applicant must’ve retired from all forms of cricket at least five years ago.
- Playing Experience: The candidate must meet at least one of these:
- Played at least seven Test matches.
- Played at least 30 first-class matches.
- Played at least 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches.
BCCI’s 2025 selector notice lists the same basic playing and retirement requirements. Parthiv retired in December 2020 and has far more than the required first-class experience.
