Agartala is all set to become more inclusive and environmentally friendly, with plans underway for dedicated bicycle lanes and barrier-free roads as part of the Smart City initiative. Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, CEO of Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL), made the announcement during an event to mark the 7th World Bicycle Day.
As part of the Urban Mobility Agenda 2025, the city will see dedicated cycling lanes along major roads, including a planned stretch from Agartala Airport to Lichubagan. “We are committed to building safe, separate lanes for cyclists to promote green and accessible transport. Cycling isn’t just eco-friendly — it’s also healthy and affordable. We want everyone, from students to working women, to feel safe and confident riding through the city,” said Dr. Yadav.
In addition to cycling infrastructure, Dr. Yadav reaffirmed ASCL’s commitment to creating roads that are accessible for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities). He emphasized that future road development under the Smart City project will be designed with inclusivity in mind, ensuring that wheelchair users can navigate city roads without barriers. “For these initiatives to succeed, we need the active support of Agartala’s citizens,” he said.
The World Bicycle Day event was jointly organised by Track and Trail Agartala and Agartala Cycle Holic. It featured a cycling rally, awareness sessions, and youth interactions focused on sustainable mobility. Over 42 student groups from schools and colleges took part, with a notable number of women participants.
Dr. Yadav and Dr. Bharati Nigam, Assistant Director of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), flagged off the rally and also joined the ride, underlining the city’s commitment to building a healthier and greener future.
The proposed infrastructure developments reflect a broader national push toward sustainable and inclusive urban living — one where non-motorised transport and accessible design take centre stage.
