Ahmedabad: Hindu girl performs last rites of Parvez Ansari who dies of TB amid coronavirus lockdown

A Hindu girl performed last rites of a Muslim boy in Ahmedabad after the latter’s relatives could not reach his place due to the coronavirus-induced nationwide lockdown. 34-year-old Chandani Nebhnani, who runs an NGO named Chandani Foundation, made arrangements for Parvez Ansari’s final rites. She video called the family so that they can see his last rites.

19-year-old Parvez was a resident of Itki Block of Ranchi district in Jharkhand. He was in very poor health when he last contacted his family members via a video call. Shocked to see him starved, the family members reached to Jharkhand authorities. Officials of Jharkhand contacted Ahmedabad Police and Parvez was rescued the same day.

Parvez Ansari was admitted to a transit ward of the civil hospital on April 19.

The family had no clue about Parvez until the police informed that he died due to Tuberculosis (TB).

According to Dr Jeetu Parikh, Parvez was suffering from bilateral pulmonary tuberculosis, and post mortem report will tell the exact cause of the death. However, Parvez was tested negative for COVID-19.

However, his elder brother Tauhid alleged that Parvez was kept hungry for three days in the TB ward of the civil hospital.

Cops told the family that the can keep the body for up to seven days and they can take the body until then. Because of nationwide lockdown and extreme poverty, the family sought help from the NGO Chandani Foundation.

Chandani called some volunteers and with their help, she took out the body from the civil hospital to perform the last rites. She took the help of a Muslim cleric and Parvez’s last rites were performed as per the ritual. His burial took place near Jhumka Minara in Gomtipur.
