Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most auspicious festivals celebrating Hinduism and Jainism, will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2020. Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is a very sacred festival for the Hindu and Jains community.
The festival is celebrated on the third lunar day of Shukla Paksha in Vaishhakha month. The dates of the festival will vary and are set according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar, usually in April or May each year.
According to Hindu beliefs, Akshaya Tritiya commemorates the birth of Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. This is why Akshaya Tritiya is also known as Parasurama Jayanti. In Jainism, Akshaya Tritiya is regarded as the first Tirthankara’s (Rishabhdev), who ended the year-long asceticism by drinking sugar cane juice poured into a glass. Some Jains called the festival Varshi Tapa.
