Aligarh Muslim University student who got severely injured during protest against amended Citizenship Act had got his hand amputated on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

AMU was one of the first campuses to respond to the chaotic, alarming scenes that unfolded in and around Jamia Millia Islamia. A demonstration against the CAA turned violent near Jamia’s premises, and the Delhi Police responded by entering the university and using what eyewitnesses say was indiscriminate force.

The AMU students were protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act as well as in solidarity with the Jamia Millia Islamia students who were baton-charged by police in Delhi before a day it happened.

Due to the violent clashes over their protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act it had left at least four students severely injured.

One of the victim injured students admitted to AMU’s Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, told that he nearly lost his entire hand to a tear gas shell that exploded in his hand. Another claimed that he sustained two fractures to his thumb and had received about 20 stitches to his hand.

“One of them lost a finger because of a shell explosion and another has a head injury. We referred one student to Gangaram Hospital as he was unstable here. He was probably injured by a blunt object,” said Haris Manzoor Khan, the medical superintendent at the hospital of AMU’s medical college.
